A note from the director
Rick Besoyan’s Little Mary Sunshine is one of the most successful musical satires of this century. The original production of 1959 ran 1,143 performances, and its star, Eileen Brennan, played to rave notices. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, Mr. Besoyan examines the operetta style of the days of Rudolf Friml and Victor Herbert. The plot, music and the staging all seem to evoke that innocent time when good triumphed over adversity, and a happy ending was guaranteed box office. The obvious machinations of the plot and silly situations of the action make us laugh, but, I hope, the production also gives a smile of fond remembrance for a time, now gone, when life upon the wicked stage was simple, diverting and meant only to entertain. Jeanette and Nelson, wherever you are…we love you truly. – John Hall
