It was on a train to Atlantic City early in 1938 that Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart realized that no one had used Shakespeare as a basis for a musical comedy. In less than a year the talents of George Abbott and George Balanchine were joined in adapting the Bard of Avon for Broadway. In November "The Boys from Syracuse" opened and was the fifth Rodgers and Hart hit musical in as many years.
Loosely based on Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors" (which was loosely based on Plautus and Menander), the show uses the mistaken identities of two sets of twins as the framework for a fast moving romp.
Antipholus of Syracuse with his servant Dromio land in Ephesus in search of their lost twin brothers. The citizens of Ephesus are hostile to anyone from Syracuse so they attempt to disguise themselves. Their disguises work so well that they are constantly mistaken for one of Ephesus' leading citizens, a philandering fellow also named Antipholus who also has a man-servant named Dromio. You guessed it, the search for the lost brothers is resolved but not without several complications and several wonderful Rodgers and Hart songs. - John Hall
